Watch the child, not just the number
Does the child want to make music and enjoy a brief focused game? Let them try a suitable guitar and pluck one string. For younger children, lessons can centre on rhythm, listening and short playful tasks.
Try the instrument
Have the child sit, hold the guitar steady and reach the first frets without lifting a shoulder. A teacher can help assess size and string height. It is better to delay buying than choose an uncomfortable guitar.
