What are the six open-string notes?
From thickest to thinnest, standard tuning is E–A–D–G–B–E. Pluck one string at a time so the tuner hears just one note. Click each string below to hear its correct pitch and tune your own guitar to it.
Use a tuner and make small changes
Attach a clip-on tuner to the headstock or open a reliable tuner app. No tuner at hand? Use the online tuner on this page: click a string and tune yours until it sounds the same. Pluck the low E and check the displayed note and pitch. Turn its matching tuning peg in tiny steps: if it is flat, tighten carefully; if sharp, loosen. Pluck again after each change. Repeat for A, D, G, B and high E.
Avoid breaking a string
If the string feels very tight or the tuner may be showing the wrong octave, stop and ask a teacher. Never wind a peg upwards quickly without checking. New strings often settle, so check all six again once you've finished.
