Tune your guitar and learn the six strings: E, A, D, G, B and E. Then practise one note or easy chord at a time. The first lesson of each course is free.

Em is a good first shape: put two fingers on fret 2 of the A and D strings. Check that every string rings clearly, then try Am.

Short, regular sessions often work better than one long session now and then. Play slowly, relax your hands and stop if it hurts.

Half, three-quarter and full size are labels, not strict age rules. Let the child try guitars and check that they can reach the first frets without stretching.

Major and natural minor scales each have seven notes but follow different patterns around their roots. A pentatonic scale uses five notes. Switch views on the fretboard to compare them.

A tab has six lines for the strings. The top line is the thin high e string; numbers tell you which fret to play. Zero means an open string.

The playable examples use public-domain melodies. For modern copyrighted songs we only show information such as the key; we don't play an invented substitute tune.
